Sean Newport creates his geometrical wall sculptures by arranging hundreds of identical hand cut wood shapes that are individually painted within customized frames. Colors seem to continually change and new patterns emerge as directional light shines in surprising ways upon three dimensional triangular shapes forming optical ridges and valleys. These visual experiments test the eye and the brain, challenging us to consider how a static object can seem so alive. Each work can be displayed eight different ways generating an array of viewing experiences.
Newport’s works have been exhibited and collected throughout the United States and internationally. The artist currently lives and works in San Francisco.
